Cantor, Georg
(3 mar. 1845, San Petersburgo, Rusia–6 ene. 1918, Halle, Alemania).

Matemático alemán, fundador de la teoría de conjuntos. Fue el primero en examinar sistemas de números, como los números racionales y los números reales, sistemáticamente como entidades, o conjuntos, completos. Esto lo llevó al sorprendente descubrimiento de que los conjuntos infinitos no son todos del mismo tamaño. En particular, demostró que los números racionales podían ponerse en una correspondencia uno a uno con los números enteros, usados para contar o numerar; de ahí que ese conjunto sea numerable. También demostró que es imposible tal correspondencia para el conjunto de los números irracionales que es de mucho mayor tamaño; de ahí que se sean conocidos como un conjunto no numerable. Sus investigaciones lo llevaron a la clasificación de los números transfinitos, que son, informalmente hablando, grados de infinito.
